Here's the question I ask at the start of every single training session:
How's your body feeling today?
It seems simple enough, but it's important.
The answer determines how I, as the coach, lead the day's session and, more importantly, it gives my client the chance to tune in to how they're feeling both physically and mentally.
That said, “tuning in” isn't always easy.
In fact it can be downright hard, especially if you were ever taught to push past what your body was telling you, that what it was telling you was wrong or that how it felt just didn't matter.
The good news is that starting to tune in doesn't have to be a long, painstaking process!
In fact, it can take less than a minute. Here's how:
Before your next exercise session, rate the following on a scale of 1-10 (if 1 is exhausted and 10 is the best you could possibly feel). Try not to think about or judge it too much, just go with the first number that pops into your head:
Sleep
Stress
Hunger
Hydration
Energy
Add it all up and use that as your score for your day. Continue to do this ahead of your exercise sessions and over time you'll start to get a good sense of where each of these levels tend to be on a day-to-day basis.
That will then help you to understand where to take your future training sessions - whether to push, pull back or keep it consistent - and start to tune in more during non-training session time too.
